Dear Lucky Dog Family,

What do they say about the best laid plans?  Last week, as we were preparing to send our newsletter out, we started hearing about Hurricane Ida.  With what is sadly becoming years of experience in disaster response, we knew we had to turn our focus away from our normal plans.  We needed to plan an emergency transport.

There were dogs and cats in desperate need of help.  And, Lucky Dog sprang into action.  We ended up participating in two emergency transports -- four days apart -- helping more than 25 displaced animals.  And, we are standing by, ready to do more.

Our ability to help in times like these, to step up when others cannot, is based on YOUR SUPPORT.  You, our Lucky Dog adopters, volunteers, and donors -- our Lucky Dog FAMILY -- are the reason we can say yes to animals in need.  Whether dogs and cats are being evacuated in the face of a national emergency or in the face of shelter overcrowding and imminent euthanasia. Whether we are helping a long time shelter partner or a brand new group needing assistance.  Every time we are asked to help, YOU are the reason we can say yes.

One way you can make a huge difference in the lives of Lucky Dogs and Cats is to join us either in person or virtually for our upcoming Casino Night.  Those in attendance at the Sheraton in Pentagon City will enjoy an evening of black jack, roulette, craps, poker and other great games.  You'll enjoy delicious food, and open bar, a great silent auction and raffle!. Those joining from home can test their luck at bingo before participating in a virtual wine tasting with Wine Access and a cocktail making demo featuring Tito's Vodka.  You'll even have your own online silent auction.

If you're anything like me, you may be a bit nervous about stepping up for an in person celebration.  Please know that we are taking every precaution, including asking that all attendees be vaccinated and wear masks when not eating and drinking, to ensure that the event not just saves lives but also IS safe!  Plus, you always have the option of celebrating from home!  Read more about Casino Night and don't delay in getting your tickets!

Thank you for all you do on behalf of our Lucky Dogs and Cats.

Volunteer Spotlight: Maaike Ravesteijn -- Volunteer Event Coordinator & Adoption Coordinator

I initially got involved with Lucky Dog as a handler in 2017. I remember everything about my first adoption event: I was driving and handling a dog named Betsy. She was a tough cookie in the best way possible. We bonded over ham and cheese McMuffins and soon became fast friends. That was the first of many events over the last 4 years, but I’ll always remember the feeling when I found out Betsy had been adopted. It’s that feeling that brings me back to Lucky Dog time and time again, first as a handler, then as an Event Coordinator and most recently as an Adoption Coordinator. Over the years of volunteering with Lucky Dog I’ve always been so impressed with the entire team who works tirelessly to help so many dogs and cats in need. I’m also appreciative of the LDAR team for allowing me to be flexible in my volunteer commitments and help in a variety of ways.

But my most treasured memory, owed entirely to this organization, was adopting my sweet Boxer mix in 2018. Josie, formerly Moni, was a lanky girl with a big noggin and the cutest wiggle butt. Lucky Dog’s fostering program made it possible for a dog like her to be brought up from Texas and find a new loving home in DC. I encourage anyone who is looking to get involved with volunteer work to consider coming out to an adoption event to help handle or drive one of our dogs or cats. Who knows — it may lead to finding your new best friend, and I promise you’ll make lots of furry friends on the way!

Share the Luck: Twinkie and Laila!

Meet Twinkie: A stunning 1-year old cream and white tabby cat, Twinkie enjoys vocally letting her foster humans know when it's dinner and playtime. Twinkie loves to be where her humans are, especially if you have treats!

Meet Laila: Laila is a 4-year old terrier mix who is the ultimate snuggler. This gorgeous girl needs to be the only four-legged member of the family and is looking for a fenced-in yard. Laila would love nothing more than to smother her humans in love, could she be a good fit for you?
