Dear Lucky Dog Family,

Last month, I wrote to you about the incredible efforts of our South Carolina team in bringing 41 animals to the Rescue Campus as Hurricane Debby was fast approaching. We were quite lucky during the storm. We did not lose power. We did not flood. While we were extremely short-handed on the heaviest day of rain due to staff members being unable to get to work, those that could make it safely to the Campus kept everything running and safe.

Our neighbors in Marion County were not so lucky. At 10:30pm on Tuesday, August 7th, Marion's shelter had to be evacuated due to rising floodwaters. The dogs were moved down the road to an abandoned vet's office to stay in crates, and the cats were placed in crates in their cat rooms on shelves above the water line.

On Wednesday, August 8th, we got a call from Marion asking for help, the same day that two of our four animal care staff could not make it to Campus. We were very full already with only 2 kennels open in Stopover Station and limited space for cats.

But, Lucky Dog always steps up in times of emergency.

"I can't believe I'm actually suggesting this. We're exhausted. We just finished cleaning and feeding, but we need to go over to Marion and help them out."

Those were the words of our Team Lead, Stephanie Moore, just before she and two of our staff got in our two vans and headed out to help. At the end of an extremely long day, they brought 14 dogs, 24 cats, and 2 guinea pigs home to the Rescue Campus. We rearranged kennel mates -- combined animals safely and carefully -- and made room to help everyone in need.

Marion's flooding was not insignificant. The roof of one of their cat rooms collapsed. Their septic system overflowed and contaminated all the dog runs. And, while their shelter was unusable, the community was finding animals in need of urgent help due to the flooding.

Over the course of the next 2 weeks, we took in an additional 20 dogs. Providing them with food, shelter, and critical veterinary care. And, at the end of 2 weeks, we were able to bring almost all of the animals into our adoption program.

I am incredibly proud of the efforts of our South Carolina Team -- and the growing impact our Rescue Campus is having in South Carolina and the greater south. As we look forward to Phase II -- a dedicated cat building and a second dog kennel, it feels like the possibilities are endless. Particularly when we have such amazing staff and volunteers helping make sure we are always able to put animals first! And, of course, none of this work is possible without your amazing support.

Thank you on behalf of all our Lucky Dogs and Cats,

Volunteer Spotlight: Deangelo Frias -- Lucky Dog Master Handler

I started volunteering for Lucky Dog back in 2022. At first, I helped out as a handler and did some driving. I also worked as a dog adoption coordinator. But now, my main focus is being a master handler! I started volunteering because since I was a little kid, I've always been around stray cats and dogs back in the Philippines. When I got stationed in D.C., I decided to get involved. During my first event as a handler, the dog I was with got adopted right at the end. It was such an amazing feeling to know that I played a part in helping that dog find their forever family. The experience was really rewarding and memorable, that's when I had that moment where I decided that I want to keep doing this. I even convinced my division to volunteer with me, and they absolutely loved it! I'm sure you would too!

Share the Luck: Adina and Dixon!

Meet Adina: A 2-year-old lab and retriever mix, Adina is a sweet and shy pup who is looking for a home with a confident resident dog to show her the ropes. She is looking for a patient and supportive family that will give her the time to let Adina's loving and caring personality shine through. A staff and volunteer favorite, we know that Adina's forever home is right around the corner. Could it be yours?

Meet Dixon: Dixon is a 1-year-old cat who can always be found cuddling with his fellow kittens at DC's Cat Cafe Meo Maison. He loves a variety of toys, especially squeaky balls, and is looking for a home with a resident cat or kitten so that he always has someone to keep him company. Does Dixon sound like the perfect cat for you? Reach out to us to find out more about this incredible cat.

This Month On The Lucky Dog Blog:

Lucky Dog's volunteer foster, adoption coordinator, and volunteer liaison Connie Kiggins shares the story of her journey into rescue.

Trainer's Corner:

Does your dog know what you want them to do? It is important to remember that dogs have limited emotional reasoning, and telling them what you want them to do and rewarding them for it is as important as telling them what you don't want them to do. Frustration happens in dogs just like people, so positive feedback for appreciated behavior is really important. Visit our partners at Dog Latin Dog Training for more tips and tricks.

Pet Health and Safety:

Do you have a disaster preparedness plan for your pets? Disasters (on both large and small scales) can happen at any time, and having a plan is so important. Check out this comprehensive article from the ASPCA for more tips and tricks!
