 | Dear Lucky Dog Family, Six months ago, if you came to a Lucky Dog adoption event, you'd be lucky to see a kitten, let alone adopt one. Each week, I would scour our shelter partners in search of whatever kittens I could find. We'd bring them to the DC area, and they'd end up directly in forever homes. Fast forward to July, and we're in the thick of kitten season. For those of you who are not especially well versed in cat rescue lingo (I certainly wasn't when I started!), the concept of kitten season is probably pretty foreign. But, within animal welfare, it is a time to be feared. As the warmer months approach -- usually starting in April -- unaltered female cats go into heat and the kittens start rolling into shelters -- the beginning of "kitten season." Female cats can become pregnant several times a year and on average have a litter of 3-5 kittens at a time....resulting in thousands of kittens ending up in shelters across the United States. And not nearly enough adopters. |
| | At this very moment, Lucky Dog has more than 100 cats and kittens in our care in the DC metro area. We have another 40 waiting at our facility in South Carolina. And, we get daily requests from our shelter partners, begging for help. This year, for the first time, Lucky Dog is partnering with a few local PetSmarts to house cats and kittens in their adoption centers! It is a great way to get these animals daily exposure to potential adopters, and we're thrilled with the increase in lifesaving capacity! We would love to expand the program, but to do that, we need your help! If you'd like a weekly kitten fix, let us know! We need volunteers who are willing to visit our PetSmart partners to play with our cats and kittens. The more people we can get to help, the more stores we can partner with to save lives! If you're interested in learning more, let Julie know! And, of course, we always are looking for more fosters for our cats and kittens. Anything to help reduce the large number of euthanasias that are happening daily in overcrowded and under-resourced shelters. If you have extra space in your home -- and your heart, let our foster team know! Thank you on behalf of all the Lucky Dogs and Cats! |

| | | | Volunteer Spotlight: Terry Rizzo -- Lucky Dog Contracts Volunteer I’ve been volunteering on the Contract Team for about a year now. The Contract Team is the last stop before the adopter goes home with their new pup. Being able to be a part of their joy and happiness makes working on the Contract Team so rewarding. Lucky Dog does so much to get their pups and kitties adopted and being on the Contact Team and witnessing the culmination of all their hard work is an amazing experience. |

Meet Blue Java: A 2-year-old grey and white cat, Blue Java is a sophisticated and enchanting lady with a heart as tender as her taste buds. | | | | Trainer's Corner: Having trouble motivating your dog using treats? Consider shifting calories out of the food bowl, and reserving some for activities like walks, classes, or other times you are seeking to train your pup. You can also combine food with reinforcements like play, toys and praise, and alternate the type of food you are offering during training. Check out Dog Latin's website for more dog training hacks! |
| | | | Pet Health and Safety: The weather outside is getting warmer, and it is so important to be sure you never leave a pet in a hot car, even for a few minutes. Cars can reach extreme temperatures very quickly, and cracking windows is not sufficient to ensure pet safety. |
